Policies & permissions

Your photo stays yours.

Sharing a photo should come with a clear, limited purpose. Here is the limited permission for displaying contributions in the Commons.

The permission needed to show your contribution

You keep ownership. You give the Commons a nonexclusive permission to store your upload, check it, make display versions and show the approved version with the contribution you submitted. This includes the contribution’s detail page, gallery, map and its share preview. We may resize or crop for those formats and remove embedded metadata. This permission does not transfer ownership or give other neighbors a general right to reuse your work.

Choose a photo you may share

Use a photo you took or one whose owner has allowed you to provide this permission. Being in a photo does not necessarily mean you own it. Do not submit someone else’s work without permission, and avoid private documents, contact information, house interiors or details that expose someone unnecessarily.

People in pictures

Make the decoration or creation the subject. If an identifiable person is featured, get their permission to appear in this public contribution. For a child, permission must come from their parent or legal guardian. Do not assume that being at a neighborhood activity grants permission for promotional use. A parent or guardian should handle contributions involving children’s personal information.

Promotion is a separate choice

Displaying a contribution and its share preview does not give blanket permission for unrelated advertising, fundraising campaigns, merchandise or other promotional reuse. Broader reuse needs permission that identifies the intended use, where it will appear, and any identifiable people or children involved. Participation does not grant that additional permission.

Withdrawal and removal

Use the available withdrawal or account controls, or Contact to ask about a photo. Stopping public display is separate from deleting the original upload and other records; Privacy explains those requests and their limits. Copies already saved or shared by other people can remain outside the Commons.

A rights or likeness concern

Contact the Commons with the page address and a description of the concern. Say whether you own the image, are depicted in it, or are acting for a child or another rights holder. A steward may need to verify the request. Do not send identity documents or private receipt secrets unless a safe verification method has been arranged.
